Children’s Day
Happy Youngsters at Selly Oak
The Prize Winners
“Children’s Day” was observed with great enthusiasm by residents of the Selly Oak and Bournbrook districts on Saturday, for it was the occasion of the annual Selly Oak and Bournbrook Children’s Festival. With the experience of the organization from previous years, the executive committee and a willing band of helpers made all the necessary arrangements which were carried out without a hitch. From an early hour on Saturday, when a number of houses and streets were adorned with flags and bunting, local children were eagerly making their way to the schools, which were the starting points of the day’s activities.
The Procession
On arrival at the various school playgrounds, the children were marshaled into small processions, and marched to Coronation Road for the start of the mass procession to Selly Oak Park. Many of the 3,200 children were in fancy dress, which were, for the most part, of an original character.
Accompanied by two well-known local bands, the procession made its way to the park by way of Dawlish Road and Bristol Road. Elliott’s Band was at the head, and was followed in order by the children of St. Mary’s School, Raddlebarn Road Girls, Raddlebarn Road juniors, Raddlebarn Road boys, St. Edward’s seniors and juniors, the Woodgate Band, 100 Maypole dancers from the local schools, Tiverton Road seniors and juniors, St. Wulstan’s boys and girls, “out scholars”, and the Bournville Ambulance Brigade at the end. Under the direction of the chief marshall, Mr. A. West, the procession made excellent progress, and arrived at the Park in good time for a full afternoon’s and evening’s enjoyment.
Fancy Dress Parade
In the park, an attractive programme of amusement, with numerous competitions and games, found enthusiastic support from the young revelers. The first item was the fancy dress parade, to the accompaniment of Elliott’s Band, followed by the Maypole dance given by 100 children from the schools of the district, trained by Mrs. Chambers and Miss Garrett. A keen spirit of friendly rivalry was shown by the children in the inter school net ball and tug of war competitions. Displays of country and folk dancing were given by the girls from St. Wulstan’s, St. Mary’s and Raddlebarn Road, and the very excellent band music was a popular feature throughout the day.
For the fancy dress competition there were no fewer than 138 entries, and 69 prizes were offered. Much ingenuity was shown by the competitors in this section, and the judges, Mr. and Mrs. W.N.D. Higgs and Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Brezener made awards which received popular approval.
Busy Helpers
The numerous helpers received eloquent thanks from the children when they saw the happiness with which their efforts had been brought to the young folks. Special mention, however, should be made of the members of the executive committee, for the success of the festival was the result of months of hard work in preparation. Mr. A. West, the Chairman, received excellent support from the Treasurer, Mr. H. Roberts, the Vice-Chairman, Mr. A. Pugh,, and the joint honorary Secretaries, Mr. W.C. Baldwin and Mr. A. Butler. The committee is responsible for the organization, in addition to the summer festival, of the children’s party at Christmas, and during the past winter, they had been responsible for the distribution of numerous pairs of boots to deserving children in the district.
The results of Saturday’s competitions were as follows:-
Tug of War: 1. Tiverton Road; 2. Raddlebarn Road.
Charles Harbun Challenge Cup (for net ball), presented by Mr. H. Readin; 1. Raddlebarn Road, 2. St. Wulstan’s.
